A Silent and Relentless Threat

Parvovirus is one of the most devastating diseases a dog can face. It does not creep in gently. It attacks with speed, violence, and little mercy, tearing through a young or unvaccinated body in a matter of days. For rescuers and veterinarians, it is a familiar enemy. For the dogs who suffer it, it is a brutal fight for survival.

A Virus That Lingers Everywhere

Canine parvovirus is highly contagious and extraordinarily resilient. It can live in soil, on pavements, in kennels, and on clothing for a long time. A single step taken in a contaminated area can carry the virus to a vulnerable puppy. On the streets, where sanitation is poor and vaccination rare, this makes parvo a constant and invisible threat.

How Parvo Destroys the Body

Once inside the body, the virus targets the fastest-dividing cells. It attacks the intestinal lining, destroying the dog’s ability to absorb nutrients and fluids. It also assaults the bone marrow and immune system, leaving the body defenceless. In very young puppies, it can even damage the heart, leading to sudden death.

The Horrors of the Symptoms

The suffering caused by parvovirus is extreme. Affected dogs endure relentless vomiting, profuse and often bloody diarrhoea, rapid dehydration, intense abdominal pain, weakness, and collapse. Fever or dangerously low body temperature may follow. The body is poisoned from within, and without urgent intervention, it quickly begins to shut down.

A Fight That Requires Intensive Care

There is no direct cure for parvovirus. Survival depends on aggressive supportive treatment: intravenous fluids, antibiotics to combat secondary infections, medication to control nausea, pain relief, and constant monitoring. Even with expert veterinary care, some puppies do not survive. Without it, most will die.

A Death Sentence for Street Puppies

For unvaccinated puppies on the streets, parvo is often a death sentence. They die in alleyways, abandoned buildings, and empty fields, too weak to seek help. Many are never seen by a veterinarian, and their suffering goes unrecorded and unmourned.

A Tragedy That Is Entirely Preventable

What makes parvovirus especially cruel is that it is preventable. A simple course of vaccinations can stop the virus before it ever takes hold. However street born pups with weakened immune systems born in challenging environments do not fare well. We have noticed a marked increased mortality rate in these little ones. And for the unlucky where access to veterinary care is limited and stray populations are large, this protection is out of reach for countless dogs who never really stand a chance.

Why Prevention Is a Moral Imperative

Parvo does not discriminate. It does not care if a puppy is loved or unwanted, born in a home or on the streets. It only seeks vulnerability. Vaccination, education, and humane population control are not optional extras they are measures that can help save a life. Until every dog has access to them, parvovirus will remain one of the most brutal and unforgiving killers in animal rescue.

This is Atış a hit & run patient waiting for the ambulance to take him to the animal hospital. In pain & concerned this boy had every right to be. Because the poor soul had been living with a broken leg for two weeks. Not two days, two weeks.

Two weeks of trying to walk on it. Two weeks of pain. Two weeks of sleeping rough with an injury that should have had urgent care from day one.

Despite his ordeal he was such a good boy, he didn’t let his pain or fear overcome him. He trusted that we were there to help him & he went gladly, no growls, no snapping, no muzzle needed. He was the model patient.

But we knew this wasn’t going to be a simple fix.

fix but two weeks changes everything.”

Why time matters with a fracture

People often assume a broken bone is just a matter of setting it and letting it heal.

If only it were that simple.

The body doesn’t wait patiently for medical help. It starts repairing immediately, even if things aren’t aligned properly. Scar tissue forms. Swelling builds. Early bone starts knitting together sometimes crooked, sometimes twisted, sometimes locked into completely the wrong position.

By the time a vet steps in weeks later, they’re not dealing with a clean break anymore. They’re dealing with the body’s rushed attempt to patch things up. And that makes surgery far more complicated.

Instead of simply stabilising the bone, the team often has to undo what’s already started healing, carefully realign everything, and then rebuild it properly.

It’s slower. It’s more invasive. And it carries more risk.

The hidden challenges you don’t see

There’s more going on beneath the surface, too.

When a dog protects an injured leg for that long, muscles tighten and joints stiffen. Blood flow drops. Tissue becomes inflamed and fragile. For a street dog, there’s also dirt, bacteria, licking all the things you don’t want near a surgical site.

Bone healing relies on good circulation and healthy tissue. Without that, recovery becomes unpredictable.

So saving the leg isn’t just about bones.

It’s about everything around them.

“We’re not just fixing a fracture. We’re fighting swelling, stiffness, poor circulation all at once. It’s like trying to repair something while the ground keeps shifting under you.”

Why we’re still trying to save the leg

People sometimes ask why we don’t simply amputate and move on.

And sometimes, that is the only option when the injury is catastrophic.

But if there’s a safe, realistic chance to keep a leg we always try.

For Atış, our vets chose to use a plate alongside an external fixator to hold everything steady while the bone heals.

If you’ve seen the video, you’ll know it looks a bit frightening at first glance. Metal bars and pins never look gentle. But it’s actually one of the best tools veterinary surgeons have. It stabilises the bone from the outside without putting extra stress on damaged tissue.

It isn’t scary. It’s clever. It’s what gives him the best chance.

But human hearts don’t like them which is why we used a soft filter on the footage because while it’s medically brilliant, we know it can look daunting to human eyes.

The Hard Truth About Healing

There’s also something we always try to be open about with complex fractures like this: there are no guarantees. Even with a plate and an external fixator perfectly placed, healing isn’t something we can force it still depends on Atış’s body doing the work.

Bone needs strong blood supply, healthy surrounding tissue, and time. Because the injury is already two weeks old, circulation has been compromised, inflammation is higher, and the early healing that started in the wrong position can slow or disrupt proper repair.

Infection, implant failure, or the bone simply refusing to knit, what vets call a non-union are all risks we have to watch for. The fixator gives him the best possible chance, but it isn’t magic. It’s support, not certainty.

Small Steps, Big Healing

With fractures like this, gentle movement as soon as possible is vital. Bone heals best when there’s good circulation, and circulation comes from use. Those tiny, careful steps get blood flowing to the repair site, bring oxygen and nutrients to the tissue, and help prevent stiffness setting into joints and muscles. In other words, movement isn’t a setback it’s medicine.

That’s why we were so encouraged when Atış started asking to go outside for the toilet almost straight away. Not carried. Not coaxed. Just quietly letting us know he wanted to get up and potter out on his own. It might sound small, but it’s actually a very good sign. It tells us he’s comfortable enough to move, strong enough to try, and already helping his body heal.

And there’s something else people don’t often think about. Street-born dogs don’t cope especially well with hospitalisation. Most have never even been inside a building before. The sounds, the smells, the confinement it’s all unfamiliar and stressful, and stress slows healing too. So every moment he feels brave enough to step outside, feel the air, and do something normal and dog-like again matters more than we can explain.

He’s taking those baby steps.
We’re right beside him.
And for now, that’s more than enough.

Sven had a wound on his rump that stopped us cold.

Large. Raw. Angry. The sort of injury that makes you wonder how a dog could possibly keep walking.

It must have rubbed with every step. Pulled when he lay down. Burned constantly. And yet somehow, this boy had carried on navigating the streets with it, because street dogs don’t get to stop and rest.

When he arrived at the hospital, the reality of what he’d endured became even clearer.

There was a bullet inside him. Someone had shot him. And there had been no help, he’d been left to cope alone.

It’s hard to describe the feeling that brings that mix of heartbreak and disbelief that people can be cruel, and that dogs can be so incredibly tough.

Holding Our Breath in Theatre

Aside from the wound, Sven was underweight but incredibly free from disease. No infections that would complicate surgery. No hidden illness waiting to steal his chance.

So we moved fast.

In theatre, the team carefully cleaned and debrided the injury, removing damaged tissue and extracting the bullet before closing everything properly. It was delicate work. The kind where the room goes quiet and everyone concentrates just a little bit harder.

You always feel it with dogs like Sven. They’ve already survived so much.

You want this to be the moment life finally turns in their favour. And it did. He came through beautifully. Steady. Strong. He wasn’t ready to give up just yet.

The Cone of Doom

Recovery, however, revealed a side of Sven we hadn’t seen before.

The sweet, quiet boy? Turns out he’s a bit of a rogue.

The second he felt better, those stitches became his life’s mission. Twisting himself like a pretzel, trying every angle possible to sneak a nibble.

So we escalated. Out came the biggest cone we could find. Not a modest one. A truly spectacular, satellite-dish-sized cone.

We apologised to Sven for the inconvenience but it really was one hundred percent necessary to stop him popping those stitches.

Learning to Rest

The most beautiful change wasn’t the healing wound. It was Sven himself. Once the pain faded and his belly was full, he softened.

He started sleeping deeply, not half-awake and ready to run. He stretched out instead of curling tight. He sighed those long, contented sighs dogs make when they finally feel secure.

For the first time in his life, he didn’t have to guard food or scan the horizon for danger. He could just rest. It sounds simple. For a street dog, it’s everything.

Sven’s Life Mattered

A wound like that on the streets doesn’t usually end in rescue. It ends in infection. Weakness. Quiet suffering. Without intervention, Sven wouldn’t be here.

But because people chose to care because supporters fund our clinical work and believe these lives matter he got surgery, warmth, food, safety. He got a chance.

And now, instead of surviving day to day, he gets to discover what it feels like to simply be a dog. To play. To nap in the sun. To be loved. Not every story starts gently.

Sven’s certainly didn’t. But his future?

Today, a Kangal dog died before he could reach the vet.
He had been accepted on to our free clinical services for vulnerable dogs as an emergency case. But his body, weakened by neglect and suffering, simply couldn’t hold on.

He never made it to the clinic.
And yet, in the final hours of his short, difficult life, he knew something precious: warmth, food, safety, and love.

A Few Hours of Peace

When he was found, he was taken inside wrapped carefully in blankets and placed near a fire. His thin body, so long exposed to cold and hunger, finally began to feel warmth.

For the first time, he had a full belly, fresh water to drink, and the soft touch of a kind woman who stroked him gently & kindly.
Those moments, the comfort, the care, the love were likely the only kindness he ever knew.

He passed away before reaching the vet, but he didn’t die alone, cold, or unloved.
He left this world surrounded by compassion, something every animal deserves, but too few ever find.

A Programme on Hold, But Hearts That Can’t Turn Away

Our free clinical services for vulnerable dogs are currently suspended.
Resources are stretched thin, funding is scarce, and demand is overwhelming, we are heavily in the red. But when cases like this arise, how can we turn them away?

We can’t.
Because to us, every dog matters.

This Kangal’s story isn’t just a moment of heartbreak; it’s a reflection of a wider crisis. Across Turkey, countless dogs live and die without access to basic veterinary care. When they finally collapse, there’s often no one left to help except the small groups and individuals who refuse to give up on them.

The Cost of a Broken System

This dog’s death is not an isolated tragedy. It’s a symptom of systemic neglect, of a society that allows street animals to suffer invisibly until it’s too late.

He should have been seen sooner.
He should have had access to treatment, nourishment, and safety.
He should have had the chance to live the life his kind eyes deserved.

Instead, his brief comfort came only at the very end from a kind lady who wrapped him in warmth, gave him food, and let him feel, perhaps for the first time, that he mattered.

The Truth, Even When It Hurts

We know that reading stories like this is painful. It hurts us too. We share them not to cause distress, but because hiding these losses would be a betrayal of the truth and of the dogs who never got their chance.

Every life matters, and every story deserves to be told. When we show the reality, the heartbreak as well as the hope we honour them properly and remind the world why this work must continue. Silence protects no one; truth saves lives.

We will remember this young Kangal who we called Tommo not just for his suffering, but for the small, profound mercy of his final hours.
He left this world warm, fed, and loved.

Hera is a young Kangal girl who has known nothing but the streets. Born without the security of a home, she learned early that survival often depends on staying out of sight especially during the brutal collection and cull drives currently happening. Like so many of her kind, Hera’s fear of humans is rooted in experience, not instinct.

When Hera was hit by a car, she was left with a broken leg and no chance of survival on her own. Our clinical work at Dog Desk Animal Action has been suspended due to lack of funding. We are currently running in the red with no lines of credit left, but when Hera’s case came to us, turning her away simply wasn’t an option.

Thanks to one incredibly kind supporter who donated £300, we were able to start her treatment. However, we still owe £900, funds we’ll be working hard to raise during our November fundraiser.

A Challenging Patient, a Gentle Approach

For Hera, even being touched was terrifying. In hospital, her stress levels were high, she tried to bolt and even lashed out in fear. The veterinary team recognised that her trauma wasn’t just physical; they carefully tailored her treatment plan to minimise stress, moving at her pace and ensuring every step was as gentle as possible.

Once her surgery was complete, the shelter team brought her to the quiet of the small clinic, where she could recover in peace. She was monitored closely until her stitches were safely removed

A Safe Space to Heal

Hera now has her own private area where she can begin to feel safe, perhaps for the first time in her life. Here, she can rest, watch the world go by, and start to understand that not all humans mean harm. In time, as she begins to relax and build confidence, the shelter manager will gradually introduce her to other dogs, one by one, until she’s ready to become part of a social group.

Hera’s journey is just beginning and so is our challenge to continue helping dogs like her, despite the financial mountain we’re climbing.

When Milo first came to our attention, he had already faced more hardship than most dogs should endure in a lifetime. Struck by a car, he was left with multiple broken bones and a long road to recovery.

As if that weren’t enough, Milo later developed Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy (HOD) and, heartbreakingly, distemper, an illness that claims the lives of so many street dogs in Turkey.

But Milo was not alone. Standing beside him, every step of the way, was his nurse: Seçkin.

A Bond Forged in Care

For a full year, Seçkin was Milo’s named nurse, dedicated to his daily care. From the practical tasks of assisting Milo’s veterinarians to the tender acts of feeding, comforting, and encouraging him through the hardest days,

Seçkin became more than a nurse. He became Milo’s companion, advocate, and lifeline.

In rescue, it is easy to focus on the illnesses, the injuries, and the crises. What can sometimes be overlooked are the human beings who quietly pour their hearts into the animals we fight for.

Seçkin represents the very best of veterinary nursing, not just clinical skill, but compassion, patience, and a refusal to give up, even when the odds were stacked against Milo.

The Longest Year

Milo’s recovery was never straightforward. HOD brought him pain and weakness. Distemper drained his strength and threatened his spirit. Yet each time Milo faltered, Seçkin was there to hold him steady.

Day by day, month by month, they battled together. When Milo managed to stand, it was Seçkin who steadied him. When Milo was too weak to eat, it was Seçkin who coaxed him to take a little food. When Milo’s body seemed to fail him, it was Seçkin’s presence — gentle, constant, reassuring — that told Milo he wasn’t fighting alone.

A Legacy of Love

Not every story goes the way we wish it would, and Milo’s journey was filled with heartbreak as well as hope. Yet what defined his year was not illness, but love.

For twelve months, Milo knew what it was to be cared for with unwavering devotion.

That bond between a broken dog and the nurse who refused to let him face his battles alone is at the heart of what nursing truly means.

It is about giving every animal the dignity of being seen, the comfort of being held, and the chance to know kindness.

For Milo, For Seçkin, For All

Milo’s story is not only about struggle, but about love that carried him through.

It is about a nurse who gave a year of his life to a dog in need and in doing so, gave Milo the greatest gift of all: the certainty that he mattered.

Patients Who Carry a Lifetime of Hardship

When our patients arrive at the clinic, they rarely come with a single, isolated problem. These are animals born and raised on the streets, exposed to disease, hunger, violence, and neglect from the moment they take their first breath. By the time they reach us, they often carry a lifetime of suffering in their small, fragile bodies. Malnutrition, parasitic infestations, open wounds, broken bones from traffic accidents, untreated infections, the list can seem endless.

Every consultation feels like opening a book already half-written, with chapters of struggle that no one has read until now. We don’t just see one illness; we see layers of conditions, stacked on top of one another, each one making the others harder to treat.

The First Task: Keep Them Alive

In these moments, there is no time to overthink. We go into survival mode. The very first priority is always the same: stop the patient from dying. Stabilise them. Ease their suffering. Keep them with us for one more hour, one more night.

Only once the immediate crisis is contained can we move to the next stage, pain relief, infection control, wound management, nutrition, long-term planning. But everything starts with that frantic urgency: ensuring the life in front of us does not slip away.

A World Away from UK Rescue Work

The contrast with rescue work in the UK is stark. In Britain, rescue centres take in animals who, while still in need of love and a home, often have some level of background care. They may have been someone’s pet before circumstances changed. They are less likely to arrive on the edge of death, carrying multiple untreated conditions.

Here, every patient is an emergency. Every day feels like triage. The luxury of focusing on rehoming, behaviour support, or preventative healthcare often feels out of reach when survival itself hangs in the balance. There is no wider safety net if we can’t pull them back from the brink, there is nothing waiting behind us to catch them.

The Emotional Strain of Survival Work

The weight of this responsibility is heavy. Living in a constant state of emergency, where the line between life and death is always so thin, places enormous strain on our mental and physical health. The adrenaline that carries us through critical cases leaves behind exhaustion, headaches, and burnout.

We carry the unspoken burden of every decision, what we managed to do, what we couldn’t do, what resources we didn’t have. Each case stays with us long after the clinic doors close. The sheer volume of suffering we witness accumulates silently inside, demanding more strength than we sometimes feel we have.

Why We Keep Going

And yet, we keep going. We do it because each life matters. Because for that animal, walking into our clinic might be their only chance at survival. We do it because we cannot look away, because we know that without intervention, there will only be silence where once there was life.

But the truth is this: while we fight for survival on behalf of our patients, we must also face the toll it takes on us. This work changes you. It chips away at your resilience. It forces you to live in a heightened state of urgency that the human body and mind were never designed to sustain.

It is both a privilege and a burden to carry the health of street-born patients on our shoulders. We do it because we must, because there is no one else. But we also know the cost on them if we stop, and on us if we keep going.

Milo was originally under the care of a community carer who kindly arranged for him to have surgery in the city following a hit & run.

Milo was left with multiple broken bones which needed urgent attention which he received promptly. He was discharged to another carer in Istanbul & sadly things began to go wrong for him.

One of Milo’s little legs grew stiff, and his joints began to swell painfully.

He visited vets & physiotherapists in Istanbul but nobody could reliably diagnose what was happening to him or how to treat it.

At this point I offered to take Milo on as a patient & we arranged to have him sent to our consultant veterinarian who was delighted to accept him.

Milo was diagnosed with a condition commonly called HOD, Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy, a painful bone disease that affects growing puppies.

What is HOD?

HOD is an inflammatory condition of the growth plates in young, large-breed dogs. It causes lameness, swelling, and severe pain. Treatment often involves strict rest, pain management, and intensive supportive care. Recovery can be slow and difficult, and in some cases, the disease leaves long-term health consequences.

Because HOD is an autoimmune-related disorder, Milo’s immune system was already compromised. Vaccinating a puppy with an unstable or suppressed immune system can trigger severe complications, which is why it was absolutely essential that Milo was not vaccinated while he was battling HOD. His little body simply would not have been able to cope with the additional challenge of processing vaccines.

He began his treatment plan & was discharged back to his carer in Istanbul.

Protecting Milo During His Recovery

Instead of vaccination, the best way to protect Milo was through careful management of his environment. His carer was advised that:

• He must be kept away from unvaccinated dogs.

• His contact with outside environments should be strictly limited.

• His health would depend on herd protection, meaning those around him needed to be vaccinated to reduce the risk of exposure.

Unfortunately, this advice was not fully followed. Milo came into contact with unvaccinated dogs, and the consequences were devastating.

When Distemper Struck

Distemper is one of the most dangerous viral diseases a dog can contract. It is highly contagious and can be fatal, particularly in young or immunocompromised dogs like Milo. Despite all he had already endured, Milo contracted distemper.

The virus attacked his nervous system, and Milo fought for his life yet again. He survived but only just.

Distemper left him with lifelong neurological damage, conditions that will affect his mobility, balance, and overall quality of life forever.

The Fight Back Begins

Supportive treatment began, and all we could do was hope that, against the odds, our little boy would survive.

Milo had to be isolated for several months while he recovered from distemper, as the disease is highly contagious and could easily spread to other patients.

During this time, his constant companion was his dedicated nurse, Seçkin, who provided the comfort and companionship Milo so desperately needed

The stiffness in Milo’s leg, which we mentioned earlier, was eventually traced to a failed surgical plate.

Sadly, while not common, plates can sometimes fail, and in Milo’s case it caused further complications. A replacement plate was fitted, but damage to the surrounding muscle from the original procedure meant that his recovery was severely hindered.

For months, Milo struggled to carry the useless limb, which was clearly slowing him down and preventing him from thriving. After much thought and discussion, we made the difficult but compassionate decision to amputate.

Milo is loved and safe now, but his future will always be shaped by the choices others made on his behalf. His courage and resilience remind us of the responsibility we carry for every animal in our care.

Milo’s journey back to health after the car accident would have been so much smoother if he had been in our care from the very beginning but sadly, that was not the case.

What comforts me now is knowing that he survived every ordeal and has emerged on the other side as the healthy, happy boy we love so dearly.

I also feel I must mention the cost of his care. I would never put a price on the life of any dog, least of all our beautiful Milo, but the decisions made before he came to us left us with a staggering bill of £8,000 just to repair the damage others poor decisions inflicted on him. That figure & his suffering still stings

Big Boy is a powerful Kangal who once worked loyally for humans. When illness struck, instead of care or gratitude, he was dumped in a village. He was left with maggot-infested wounds and legs that could barely hold him up.

A Kind Carer, a Dangerous Prescription

A compassionate community carer reached out for help. A vet prescribed medication for Big Boy without ever examining him. What followed was catastrophic. Instead of improving, he rapidly declined. Within just five days, he could no longer stand and was consumed by pain.

Something Wasn’t Right

When we heard of his suffering, we offered to help.

At the animal hospital, Big Boy tested positive for Mycoplasma haemcanis, a blood parasite we know how to treat successfully & easily.

But his symptoms didn’t fit. The worsening neurological signs suggested something much more serious was happening inside his body.

The Hidden Poison Revealed

After much back and forth, the truth emerged: Big Boy hadn’t just been sick, he had been poisoned by the very medications prescribed to help him.

He had been misdosed with two drugs, one of which is highly questionable to dispense at all. Instead of recovery, he was pushed into crisis.

In a critical state Big Boy needed a transfusion and is now undergoing treatment for poisoning. The transfusion helped but he is still severely anaemic & undergoing further treatment to help him with that.

A Bill That Should Never Have Been

This tragedy has cost Big Boy dearly.

He has endured unnecessary suffering, fighting for his life against something entirely avoidable.

A case of mycoplasma alone would have been straightforward to treat, costing only a few hundred pounds. But because of negligence and reckless prescribing, the costs and his suffering have spiralled.

A Warning to Donors

This case underlines a vital truth: not all care is equal, and not all services are safe. Donating blindly, without knowing what you are funding, can support dangerous practices that harm animals rather than heal them.

Choosing to support organisations like ours that insist on proper, professional veterinary care means your generosity truly saves lives.

Big Boy’s ordeal is proof of what happens when standards are ignored. And this is not the first time a dog has been let down by a vet resulting in us having to help them.

Big Boy’s Fight Continues

Today, Big Boy is still in hospital, battling both infection and the devastating effects of poisoning.

We do not yet know if he will survive. What we do know is that he is finally receiving the best care available because that is what every animal deserves.

Whatever the outcome, his story must serve as a warning and a call to action: animals cannot afford anything less than expert care.

When Oliver was found, he was just a tiny Kangal puppy facing a world of pain and fear. At only a few months old, his life should have been filled with play, discovery, and comfort. Instead, Oliver became the victim of a cruel hit and run – struck by a vehicle and left alone on the roadside.

When Harry first came under our care, he was a tiny puppy with a huge battle ahead. Malnourished and fragile, he showed the classic signs of rickets—soft, painful bones.

Even then, his tail thumped hopefully at the sight of a friendly face. That optimism has carried him through a gauntlet of illnesses, and today we’re thrilled to share that Harry is thriving—and scheduled for his long-delayed neuter next week.

The first diagnosis: rickets

Rickets is a preventable disease caused by poor nutrition and a lack of essential vitamins and minerals during growth. For a developing puppy, it can mean bowed limbs, bone pain, and delayed development.
Our veterinary team built Harry a careful recovery plan that focused on:

• A balanced, puppy-specific diet to restore the nutrients his growing body needed

• Vet-directed supplementation with careful calcium–phosphorus balance

• Gentle physiotherapy and controlled exercise to build strength safely

• Regular checks to track improvement

Slowly, Harry’s steps became steadier. His posture improved. And that little thump-thump tail became a metronome for progress.

Skin battles: fungal infection and mange

Poor nutrition and stress left Harry’s skin vulnerable. He developed a fungal skin infection alongside mange, leading to hair loss, itching, and sore, crusted patches. With parasite treatment, medicated baths, pain and itch relief, and scrupulous hygiene and isolation, his coat began to regrow and his skin settled. Mealtimes turned into happy, waggy events instead of a struggle.

A cruel setback: parvovirus

Just as Harry began to turn a corner, he developed parvovirus, a highly contagious and often deadly disease for unvaccinated puppies. Parvo is frightening—there’s no sugar-coating it—but early intervention and meticulous nursing can save lives.

Harry was admitted for isolation care, IV fluids, anti-nausea medication, careful nutrition support, and constant monitoring to prevent secondary complications. Our team and supporters rallied; every encouraging update felt like another rung up the ladder. After days that felt like weeks, Harry’s spark returned. He ate. He played. He won.

One more hurdle: papilloma virus

As if parvo weren’t enough, Harry developed a very nasty case of papilloma virus—painful oral warts that made eating uncomfortable.

With immune support Harry should have improved but sadly he needed a hand & had to have cryosurgery.

The toughest test: distemper

Later, Harry faced canine distemper, another serious viral illness. Distemper recovery takes patience and vigilant supportive care.

Harry received intensive nursing, careful nutrition and hydration, and close monitoring for any respiratory or neurological complications.

He proved, yet again, that he’s made of stern stuff. Today he’s bright, playful, and doing brilliantly; we’ll continue to keep an eye on him as he grows to ensure there are no lingering effects.

Why neutering was delayed—and why it matters

Because of Harry’s fragile health, we postponed neutering until he was robust enough for anaesthesia and recovery. That time is finally here. Harry’s neuter is scheduled for next week, a key step for his long-term wellbeing and responsible population management. It also means he’s one milestone closer to the bright future he deserves.

Harry is larger than life—brimming with energy. He’s a confident character who knows his own mind, adores his friends, and never says no to a jolly good rough-and-tumble.

Sally arrived with a quiet bravery that hid just how much she’d been coping with. An old ankle fracture had fused in the wrong position, and she was born with a painful hip defect. After careful assessment with our veterinary team, Sally recently had a femoral head excision (FHO) — a surgery that stops the painful bone‑on‑bone contact in the hip so she can move more comfortably.

What Was Going On

• Fused ankle: Because the joint can’t bend properly, Sally had to walk awkwardly for a long time.

• Painful hip: The congenital defect meant the ball and socket didn’t sit right, causing inflammation and pain.

The Surgery — In Plain English

An FHO removes the ball of the hip joint. Without that painful bone‑on‑bone contact, the surrounding muscles develop a comfortable “false joint.” For dogs like Sally, it’s a reliable way to reduce pain and give them back everyday movement.

Cedric arrived with us as a puppy through our Free Healthcare for Vulnerable Dogs programme. He’d been trying to survive on whatever he could find. That desperation led him to swallow something that wasn’t food. The result was frightening: a rectal prolapse.

Our team moved quickly to stabilise him, protect the exposed tissue, remove necrotic tissue, control pain and fix the prolapse. Just as important, we made sure Cedric finally had proper food.

Why hunger hurts

When puppies don’t have enough to eat, they scavenge. Non‑food items can irritate the gut and cause straining, which can trigger a prolapse. Lack of proper nutrition also starves growing bones of what they need. Cedric’s story shows how poverty creates preventable emergencies — and why early, free access to a vet can be the difference between crisis and recovery.

After the emergency: what happened next

Once we’d fixed Cedric’s prolapse, life slowed down and he could be a puppy again.

• To begin with: Cedric flourished after his surgery, he became the happy, lively puppy he was always meant to be.

• As he shot up in size: We noticed a gentle outward curve in his front leg. That bend has a name — angular limb deformity (ALD)

• What we did: Kept his growth steady and offered regular check‑ups so we could step in if needed.

Growing pains, explained simply

Angular limb deformity (ALD) sounds complex, but here’s the plain‑English version: one side of a growing bone slows down while the other keeps going, so the leg bends. You might see a slight bow or twist and a different way of walking. Causes can include a knock to a growth plate, getting the wrong balance of nutrients during rapid growth, or just uneven growth in a fast‑growing pup.

What we did for Cedric

• Kept his meals balanced and measured to support steady growth (not too fast, not too slow).

• Used repeat X‑rays to track his bones as he grew.

• Gave gentle, controlled exercise to build muscle without over‑stressing joints.

• Checked his comfort and gait regularly so we could step in if anything changed.

When AL Arrived

AL came into our care exhausted and in pain.

He was battling on multiple fronts: anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis (both tick-borne infections), alongside painful dental abscesses that made eating a daily struggle.

It was clear he’d been coping with discomfort for far too long, and he needed calm, consistent care to have a chance at recovery.

Understanding the Diagnosis

Tick-borne diseases like anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis can cause fever, lethargy, joint pain, and problems with blood cells and immunity.

Layered on top of that, AL’s dental abscesses created constant oral pain and infection pressure.

The combination left him run-down and vulnerable—every small task was harder than it should have been.

A Tough Few Months

AL’s treatment plan started with targeted antibiotics to address the tick-borne infections. Recovery from these illnesses isn’t instant, progress often comes in careful, incremental steps. There were better days and harder days, but AL kept showing us his steady, gentle resilience.

At the same time, we worked with our veterinary team to stabilise his mouth. Dental infections don’t just hurt; they can also fuel wider inflammation and slow recovery from other conditions. We managed the pain, supported his nutrition with soft, tempting meals, and prepared for corrective dental work once it was safe

The Turning Point: Dental Surgery

After antibiotics and monitoring, AL underwent tooth removal to resolve the worst of the abscesses.

Dental surgery can be daunting, but for dogs like AL it is often the moment everything starts to change.

Removing the source of pain allows the body to regroup; eating gets easier, spirits lift, and energy returns.

Where AL Is Today

We’re delighted to share that AL is much more comfortable now.

He’s eating with enthusiasm, resting deeply, and greeting his carers with that calm, sweet look we’ve come to know so well.

While we’ll continue to keep a close eye on him but we’re hopeful his problems have now resolved.

When Roxy came into our care, we immediately noticed that she was suffering with vaginal hyperplasia. This condition, caused by hormonal changes during a female dog’s cycle, causes the vaginal tissue to swell and protrude outside the body. It can be painful, distressing, and, if left untreated, can lead to serious complications.

What puzzled us was that Roxy had already been spayed. Vaginal hyperplasia is a hormone-driven condition, and in spayed dogs it simply shouldn’t occur.

The Shocking Truth

On closer investigation, our vets discovered that Roxy’s original spay surgery had not been carried out properly at all. Both of her ovaries were still completely intact.

This meant that despite being recorded as “spayed,” Roxy’s body was continuing to produce the same levels of reproductive hormones as an unspayed female. Those hormones were the direct cause of her painful vaginal hyperplasia.

This is very different from ovarian remnant syndrome, where tiny fragments of ovarian tissue are mistakenly left behind. In Roxy’s case, the situation was far worse — neither ovary had been removed at all.

The Corrective Surgery

Once the problem was identified, Roxy underwent proper surgery to finally remove both ovaries.

Now, for the first time, Roxy is free from the pain and distress she endured for so long.

A Troubled Arrival

At Dog Desk Animal Action, we recently welcomed a tiny puppy named Ozzy into our Free Healthcare for Vulnerable Dogs programme. Ozzy is very young—far too young to have endured the suffering she has already experienced.

She arrived at our facility in a heart breaking state, with burns covering around 40% of her tiny body. Despite spending several days under the care of another clinic, Ozzy came to us infected, in pain, and with open, untreated wounds.

The skin had not even been cleaned.

The vet responsible for her care had deemed her fit for discharge, prescribing only a topical cream

This is not just a lapse in judgment—this is a critical failure of care.

Why Prompt Treatment Is Vital for Burn Victims

Burn injuries in puppies are medical emergencies.

Puppies have underdeveloped immune systems and thin, sensitive skin, making them especially vulnerable to complications.

Burn wounds are open invitations for infection, and without proper cleaning, debridement (removal of dead tissue), pain management, and systemic antibiotics, they can quickly become life-threatening.

In Ozzy’s case, that’s exactly what happened.

She developed an infection and remains in critical condition. At this stage, we simply do not know if she will survive. But what we do know is that her condition was preventable—if she had received even basic, standard veterinary care.

The Cost of Neglect

The failure to act quickly and appropriately when Ozzy first presented with burns may cost her life.

To apply a topical cream to burns this severe, without even cleaning the wounds or managing pain, shows an appalling disregard for her welfare. Veterinary professionals have a duty of care, especially when treating young, vulnerable animals. Anything less than appropriate and timely medical intervention is not only negligent—it is dangerous.

We are devastated for Ozzy.

Her suffering could have been eased, her infection prevented, and her chances of survival significantly improved. Instead, her pain was prolonged, and her life is now hanging in the balance.
