He filmed himself skinning, cooking and eating a dog. He didn’t hide it. He didn’t keep it private. He uploaded the video to social media, where it quickly spread across the internet, attracting hundreds of thousands of views before being removed. Days later he was arrested. He has now been sentenced to eight months in prison.

The case has shocked people around the world, but for Dog Desk Animal Action the most important question isn’t simply what happened to one dog. It is how we reached a point where somebody believed this was content worth creating.

The influencer, Ayoub Ben Nesnes, already had a substantial online following. His videos had long relied on provoking reactions, pushing boundaries and attracting attention. This time, the subject was a dog.

He has denied killing the animal, claiming he found it already dead after it had been struck by a vehicle. Public reports do not establish that the court found he killed the dog himself. What is beyond dispute is that he chose to film himself skinning it, cooking it and eating it before uploading the footage for the world to see.

Some people will focus on the prison sentence. Others will debate whether it should have been longer or shorter. Those discussions are important, but they risk overlooking something much bigger.

Why are animals increasingly becoming props for online content?

Every day social media rewards the extraordinary. The more shocking the video, the more likely people are to stop scrolling. They react, they comment, they share it with friends in disbelief. Before long the content has travelled across countries and languages, reaching millions of people who may never even have heard of the person who uploaded it.

That attention has value.

Large audiences create opportunities. More followers lead to greater influence. Greater influence can open the door to advertising, sponsorships and other commercial opportunities. We cannot know what was in this influencer’s mind when he made the video, but we do know that social media platforms consistently reward material that provokes the strongest emotional reactions.

That should concern anyone who cares about animals.

Whether an animal is alive or dead, there is something profoundly unsettling about reducing it to a spectacle. The dog ceases to be an individual deserving of dignity and becomes nothing more than a means of capturing attention.

This is not just a Moroccan story. It is part of a much wider question about what social media is becoming and what it is encouraging. Every time an animal is frightened, provoked, injured or used simply because somebody believes it will generate engagement, we move a little further away from compassion and a little closer to treating living beings as disposable entertainment.

Technology did not create cruelty, but it has transformed the speed at which cruelty, outrage and controversy can be consumed. The algorithm does not distinguish between kindness and shock. It simply measures engagement.

Animals deserve better than to become content. They deserve better than to become challenges, stunts or viral moments designed to capture attention for a few fleeting days before the internet moves on to the next sensation.

Somewhere between filming it, editing it and pressing publish, a dog stopped being a living being and became content. That should horrify every one of us.

For almost two decades, Türkan Dağdelen has been a familiar name in Türkiye’s animal welfare movement. As the founder of HAYDOS (Friends of Animals Association), she has spent years rescuing injured dogs, feeding free roaming animals and speaking out against cruelty. To many supporters she is simply Panter, a woman who has dedicated her life to animals that few others would help.

Today she is back in prison.

It is a story that has attracted surprisingly little attention outside Türkiye, despite raising uncomfortable questions about the relationship between animal protection and the criminal justice system.

Recent posts from HAYDOS confirm that Türkan is currently serving a prison sentence after being returned to custody earlier this year. According to the organisation, she believed she had completed the custodial element of her sentence following an earlier release, only to discover that further time remained to be served. She is now being held in an open prison in Dalaman and is occasionally permitted short periods of leave while continuing to worry about the hundreds of animals that relied on her.

The obvious question is: what happened?

The publicly available information is remarkably sparse. Turkish media consistently report that the convictions relate to offences described as unlawfully obtaining or disseminating personal data and simple assault. Reports also state that these convictions combined to produce a final prison sentence of around nine years.

It is impossible not to notice the contrast with another case we have followed closely.

Last year, Ankara doctor Muhammet Mustafa Duman was sentenced to 9 years 9 months after being convicted of killing, sexually abusing and mutilating puppies. At the time it appeared to mark a turning point in how Türkiye dealt with extreme animal cruelty.

But that sentence did not stand. The conviction was overturned on appeal, a retrial was ordered and, following that retrial, the sentence was reduced to 4 years 4 months.

Türkan Dağdelen’s reported cumulative prison sentence is now around nine years.

That comparison is not intended to suggest the two cases are legally equivalent. They are not. One concerns convictions arising from disputes connected with animal-rights activism. The other concerns convictions arising from the torture and killing of animals.

But it inevitably raises a question that many people will ask:

How can one of Türkiye’s best-known animal rescuers be serving a sentence of around nine years while a man originally sentenced to 9 years 9 months for killing and sexually abusing puppies ultimately received 4 years 4 months after retrial?

HAYDOS has always maintained that the criminal cases arose during Türkan’s work protecting animals. In a statement issued when she was first imprisoned in 2023, the organisation said she had been jailed following disputes that developed while defending animal rights. It described her not as a dangerous criminal, but as someone whose attempts to protect animals repeatedly brought her into conflict with others.

That statement does not deny that convictions were handed down. Rather, it argues that the legal cases cannot be understood without recognising the circumstances in which they arose.

Our own research suggests at least one of those disputes centred on allegations that a local man had abused a dog. According to reports from the time, Türkan published information on social media identifying the alleged suspect after witnesses contacted her. The man denied the allegation and complained that he and his family had been exposed to harassment after the publication.

Under Turkish law, offences involving personal data are broader than many people realise. They can include unlawfully obtaining, publishing or disseminating information that identifies another person. Whether that particular incident ultimately formed part of Türkan’s conviction remains unclear because the detailed court judgments have not been made publicly available.

That lack of transparency is frustrating.

A sentence approaching nine years is significant in any legal system. It is therefore reasonable to ask what combination of cases and convictions resulted in such a lengthy custodial term. At present, neither the court documents nor comprehensive legal analysis appear to be publicly accessible.

The case also arrives at a time when many animal welfare campaigners in Türkiye continue to express concern about accountability for cruelty against animals. There have been numerous high profile investigations, appeals and acquittals in recent years that have left campaigners questioning whether justice is being delivered consistently. Those concerns form the backdrop against which Türkan’s imprisonment is now being viewed by supporters.

None of this means the courts were wrong. Equally, it does not mean that every criticism made by supporters is correct. Facts are important, and there are still important pieces of this story missing.

What can be said with confidence is that one of Türkiye’s longest serving and best known animal rescuers is once again behind bars, while the animals she spent years caring for now depend on others to continue that work.

For Dog Desk Animal Action, this story is not about taking sides in a criminal case. It is about asking questions.

How did years of animal welfare disputes accumulate into a prison sentence of this length? What were the precise facts behind each conviction? And what does it mean for the future of animal protection when experienced rescuers find themselves removed from the very work that defined their lives?

Until those questions are answered with greater transparency, the story of Türkan Dağdelen remains incomplete.

A woman in Fethiye, Türkiye, has spoken of the terrifying moment a man allegedly entered her enclosed garden and stabbed her dog five or six times, leaving the animal fighting for its life.

According to the owner, the incident began during a routine morning walk when her dog briefly approached another dog. As the two animals barked at one another, her dog reportedly gave the other dog’s owner a minor bite to the leg. She says she immediately put her dog back on the lead and returned home, believing the incident had ended.

Instead, around 10 to 15 minutes later, the man allegedly tracked down her home, climbed over the boundary into her private garden and attacked her dog with a bladed weapon before walking away.

The dog was rushed for emergency veterinary treatment and underwent a four hour operation. The owner says the attack caused severe injuries to the dog’s neck cartilage and windpipe, with multiple puncture wounds requiring extensive surgery. Fortunately, the dog survived.

The owner has also raised concerns about what happened after the attack. She says that when she went to the police station while her dog was still in surgery, she was initially told to identify the suspect herself by finding his vehicle registration or personal details. It was only after local animal welfare advocates became involved that the suspect was identified and questioned. He was later released while the legal process continues.

She says she now fears for her own safety and has reported seeing the man carrying a metal tipped stick while walking his dog. With support from the Muğla Bar Association’s Animal Rights Commission, she intends to pursue the case through the courts.

The case has prompted criticism from animal welfare organisations, which argue that incidents involving extreme violence towards animals must be treated with the seriousness they deserve. Questions have also been raised about why the burden of identifying a suspect appeared to fall, at least initially, on the victim herself rather than the authorities.

Under Türkiye’s Animal Protection Law No. 5199, intentionally killing or subjecting companion animals to acts of cruelty can result in imprisonment. Whether those provisions will ultimately be applied in this case will be determined by the ongoing legal process.

Whatever the outcome, the incident is a stark reminder that violence against animals often occurs in places where they should be safest. This was not an attack on a stray dog in a remote location. According to the allegations, it involved a man entering private property and repeatedly stabbing a family dog inside its own garden.

The dog survived. The emotional impact on its owner may take far longer to heal.

The discovery of at least 117 buried dogs at a self-described no kill rescue in California has become one of the most significant animal welfare investigations in recent years. What began as a local inquiry has expanded into a complex investigation involving local, state and federal agencies as authorities work to establish what happened to hundreds of animals transferred into the organisation’s care.

The scale of the physical evidence recovered is extraordinary.

Investigators have exhumed the intact remains of 117 dogs from two burial sites on the property. They have also recovered 21 canine skulls, hundreds of additional bones and six loose microchips from nearby areas. The remains were found in varying stages of decomposition, indicating that the deaths did not all occur at the same time.

Veterinary forensic teams examined 70 of the recovered dogs at the scene using radiography and other forensic techniques. According to investigators, many of those examinations identified bullet fragments consistent with gunshot wounds. The remaining 47 dogs were collected as evidence and removed for further examination because they could not be processed during the excavation.

Investigators have also identified what they believe may have been the location where dogs were killed. Inside a barn on the property they recovered more than 600 dog collars, numerous spent shell casings and other items now being examined as part of the investigation. Authorities believe the collars may help identify dogs that passed through the rescue and connect them with shelter and veterinary records.

One of the most significant developments is the timeline emerging from the investigation. Detectives believe the recovered dogs were buried between January and April 2026. If that assessment is confirmed through the investigation, it would indicate that the deaths occurred over a period of only a few months rather than accumulating over many years.

Identification of the animals remains a major part of the investigation. Investigators have recovered more than 90 microchips from the remains and surrounding evidence. Those microchips are being matched against shelter, veterinary and registration records to identify individual dogs, establish where they originated and notify the organisations or owners connected to them.

The investigation extends well beyond the dogs already recovered.

Authorities say 918 dogs were transferred to the rescue from public shelters and other organisations between January 2025 and the beginning of the investigation. Records examined so far account for 116 documented adoptions and 71 dogs that investigators have confirmed are alive. The whereabouts or final outcomes of hundreds of other dogs remain under investigation while records are reconciled and individual animals are traced.

It is important to distinguish between what investigators believe and what has been legally established. Authorities have not concluded that every recovered dog died as a result of unlawful acts, the precise cause of death has not yet been determined for every animal, and no criminal charges have been filed at the time of writing. The investigation remains active and investigators continue to analyse forensic evidence and documentary records.

Whatever the eventual outcome of the criminal investigation, the case already raises important questions about oversight within the animal rescue sector.

Animal rescue depends on public trust. Every day, thousands of rescue organisations, sanctuaries, foster carers and volunteers work tirelessly to save animals, often with limited resources and extraordinary dedication. Their work depends upon the confidence of donors, volunteers, municipal authorities and the wider public.

When public shelters transfer animals to private rescue organisations, what responsibility remains to ensure those animals are safe? Is there routine follow up? Are receiving organisations subject to independent inspection? Are detailed records of admissions, transfers, veterinary treatment, adoptions, euthanasia and deaths routinely reviewed? Can every transferred animal be traced throughout its time in rescue?

These are not questions directed solely at one organisation in California. They are questions that every country, state and municipality should be prepared to answer.

The investigation also shines a light on the use of the term no kill. While widely recognised by the public, the phrase does not always carry the same legal meaning across different jurisdictions. Supporters often associate it with a commitment that healthy or treatable animals will not be euthanised, yet the standards governing its use can vary considerably. Greater clarity about what the designation means, and what reporting obligations accompany it, could help strengthen public understanding and confidence.

The overwhelming majority of rescue organisations operate with integrity, compassion and transparency. If wrongdoing is ultimately established in this case, responsibility rests with those involved, not with the countless ethical organisations whose work improves the lives of animals every day.

Public confidence in animal rescue is built not only on compassion but on accountability. When hundreds of animals pass from public shelters into private care, society must be able to understand what happened to them. Robust oversight protects animals, supports responsible rescue organisations and reassures the public that trust has been well placed.

Animal cruelty cases often provoke strong public reactions, but they also provide an opportunity to examine how animal protection laws are applied in practice. A recent case from Kocaeli has done exactly that, raising important questions about the threshold for criminal liability under Türkiye’s animal protection legislation.

The case centred on an incident at a supermarket in Karamürsel, where video footage widely shared on social media showed a market employee calling a free roaming cat towards her before spraying a chemical cleaning product directly into the animal’s face. Another employee recorded the incident on a mobile phone.

The video prompted widespread public outrage. Police detained those involved and the supermarket dismissed the employee following the incident. Prosecutors subsequently charged both defendants with the offence of violence and cruelty against an animal. At the first hearing, the public prosecutor told the court that the legal elements of the offence had been established and requested prison sentences of between six months and three years.

Given the public nature of the evidence, many expected the case to result in a criminal conviction.

Instead, the Karamürsel Criminal Court of First Instance acquitted both defendants of the criminal charges. According to the reports published following the hearing, the court concluded that the legal elements of the offence had not been established. Rather than imposing a criminal sentence, the court issued administrative fines of 1,500 Turkish lira against each defendant under the Misdemeanours Law.

That outcome naturally raises questions.

The incident was captured on video. Prosecutors considered the available evidence sufficient to bring criminal charges and to seek custodial sentences. The supermarket itself reportedly dismissed the employee following the incident. Yet the court reached a different conclusion, determining that the conduct did not satisfy the legal requirements necessary for a criminal conviction.

At the time of publication, Dog Desk Animal Action has been unable to locate the court’s written reasoned judgment explaining how it reached that conclusion. While multiple news organisations have reported that the court found the legal elements of the offence were not established, we have not been able to identify a publicly available copy of the judgment setting out the court’s legal reasoning in detail.

Court judgments are rarely based solely on whether an incident appears disturbing or attracts public condemnation. Criminal courts must determine whether the prosecution has proved every legal element of the offence beyond the required standard. Without access to the written judgment, it is impossible to know whether the acquittal resulted from the court’s interpretation of the legislation, its assessment of intent, its evaluation of the evidence or another legal issue altogether.

Until those reasons become available, speculation serves little purpose.

What can be said with confidence is that this case demonstrates the importance of transparency in animal welfare prosecutions. Cases that generate significant public concern deserve clear judicial reasoning, particularly where the outcome differs so markedly from public expectations.

Should the court’s written judgment become publicly available, Dog Desk Animal Action will review it and provide further analysis of the legal reasoning behind the acquittal. Until then, the central question remains unanswered, why did a court conclude that the legal elements of a criminal animal cruelty offence had not been established in a case that prosecutors believed warranted imprisonment?

A disturbing incident in İzmir has once again highlighted the risks faced by people who dedicate their time to helping animals.

According to local reports, pharmacist and animal welfare volunteer Beray Yürek travelled to an area near Selçuk after receiving information about a sick street dog requiring assistance. Yürek alleges that after arriving she was attacked by a man who had used the report to bring her to the location. Reports state that she managed to escape and later contacted the authorities. The suspect was subsequently detained and has since been remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings.

The allegations are deeply troubling in their own right. Nobody responding to an animal welfare concern should ever find themselves in a situation where they fear for their own safety.

What makes the incident particularly concerning is that it highlights a reality often overlooked by those outside the animal welfare sector.

Across Turkey, thousands of people spend their own time helping animals. They feed dogs and cats, arrange veterinary treatment, transport injured animals, respond to emergency calls and provide support to communities struggling to care for local animals. Most do this voluntarily, without payment and often with very limited resources.

When people see an injured dog, an abandoned litter or an animal in distress, it is frequently these volunteers who are called first.

Their work is often demanding, emotionally exhausting and financially challenging. Increasingly, some also find themselves operating in an environment where tensions surrounding street animals have become highly polarised.

The debate surrounding Turkey’s street dogs has intensified significantly over the past two years. Discussions that once focused primarily on welfare, sterilisation and community care have become increasingly confrontational. Social media has amplified divisions, public rhetoric has hardened and disagreements that might once have remained political or ideological have become deeply personal.

Most people, regardless of their views on street dog policy, reject violence and intimidation. Nevertheless, incidents such as this raise uncomfortable questions about the atmosphere that has developed around the issue.

Animal welfare volunteers should be able to respond to reports of injured or sick animals without fearing that they may be placing themselves at risk. They should not have to wonder whether a call for help is genuine. They should not have to consider their own safety before attempting to assist an animal in need.

Trust is essential to animal welfare work. Communities rely on volunteers to respond when animals are injured, abandoned or in distress. Volunteers rely on members of the public to report concerns honestly and in good faith. When that trust is damaged, it affects more than the individual involved. It risks undermining the willingness of others to respond when animals genuinely need help.

The response from local authorities has been swift. Reports indicate that the suspect has been arrested and that his employment with the municipality has been terminated. Those developments will provide some reassurance that the allegations are being treated seriously.

However, the incident remains a sobering reminder of the vulnerability of many people working on behalf of animals. Every day, volunteers across Turkey answer calls about injured dogs, abandoned puppies, sick cats and animals requiring urgent assistance. Most expect to encounter suffering, neglect or difficult conditions. They do not expect to encounter violence.

Whatever position people take on the future of Turkey’s street dogs, there should be agreement on one principle.

Helping an animal in need should never be a dangerous act.

For many animal welfare organisations, the story ends when the dogs die.

Evidence is lost, witnesses are reluctant to come forward, and those responsible walk away believing there will be no consequences. That is one reason why cases of animal cruelty so often disappear from public view. They become another tragic story shared online before being forgotten.

On the Thai island of Koh Samui, a local rescue organisation refused to let that happen.

In March 2026, dogs cared for by Rob’s Dogs were deliberately poisoned. The loss was devastating for a team that has dedicated years to caring for vulnerable animals on the island. Yet instead of accepting that nothing could be done, the organisation began a painstaking effort to uncover who was responsible.

According to Rob’s Dogs, the poisoning took place after dark, leaving investigators with only poor-quality security camera footage to work with. What followed was an extraordinary community led investigation.

Volunteers reviewed hours of footage, comparing clothing, motorcycle shapes and movements through the area. By matching timestamps and cross-referencing municipal security cameras, they were eventually able to identify a motorcycle registration number linked to the transportation of poisoned chicken allegedly used in the attack.

The investigation did not stop there. The trail ultimately led to multiple individuals and, according to Rob’s Dogs, one participant identified others involved in the poisoning.

The organisation says the individual behind the poisoning admitted his actions and claimed they were justified because dogs had allegedly taken chickens he kept. However, the evidence described by Rob’s Dogs paints a far broader and more disturbing picture than a single act of retaliation.

The rescue group alleges that poisoned bait was distributed repeatedly across the area. They believe multiple dogs were killed over a sustained period of time and that the real number of victims may never be known because many incidents go unreported. They also report that poisoned monitor lizards were found near some of the bait.

Perhaps most concerning are allegations that poisoned chicken was placed near homes where children live, close to swimming pools regularly used by children, and on private property in attempts to target specific dogs. If accurate, these allegations raise concerns not only about animal welfare but also about wider public safety. Poison left in public spaces rarely affects only the intended target.

Rather than remaining a private dispute between neighbours, the case was formally reported and pursued through the legal system. Rob’s Dogs worked alongside Watchdog Thailand, one of Thailand’s most prominent animal cruelty investigation organisations, while local police and prosecutors continued the case through the courts.

On 10 June 2026, the case reached the Provincial Court on Koh Samui. According to reports shared by those involved in the case, the defendants were found guilty. The court imposed fines of 5,000 Thai baht per defendant, suspended custodial sentences, and ordered the payment of approximately 50,000 Thai baht in legal costs.

Some animal welfare advocates may feel the penalties were modest given the seriousness of the allegations and the loss of animal life. Others may view the outcome differently. In many cruelty cases, particularly those involving community animals, no one is ever identified, charged or brought before a court. In this case, the individuals responsible were reportedly identified, prosecuted and convicted.

Animal cruelty cases are often used as evidence that a country is failing animals. Yet there is another side to the story. A functioning animal welfare system is not one in which cruelty never occurs. Such a system does not exist anywhere in the world. A functioning system is one in which cruelty can be reported, investigated and brought before the courts.

For those of us working in animal welfare internationally, there is an important lesson here.

This case appears to have reached court because neighbours shared security footage, because rescuers refused to give up, because investigators followed the evidence, and because organisations were willing to support the process through to its conclusion.

Sadly, nothing can bring back the dogs who lost their lives.

The grief experienced by the Rob’s Dogs team is clear in their public statements. Behind every poisoning statistic are individual animals who were known, cared for and loved. Those losses remain.

Yet by pursuing the case, the organisation may have achieved something that extends far beyond justice for their own dogs. They have shown that animal cruelty does not have to be accepted as inevitable and that those responsible are not always untouchable.

That decision prompted an objection from the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, which argued for a stronger response. The objection was accepted and the suspect was subsequently taken back into custody while the investigation continues

What Do We Actually Know?

Surprisingly little.

Authorities have confirmed that 33 dead cats were found and that an investigation is underway under Turkey’s animal protection legislation. Beyond that, many of the most important questions remain unanswered. We do not yet know:

• How the cats died.

• Whether they died naturally or from disease.

• Whether they were euthanised.

• Whether any deaths were unlawful.

• Whether post-mortem examinations have established a cause of death.

• Whether all of the cats came from the same source

Animal welfare cases often become emotionally charged very quickly, particularly when large numbers of animals are involved. Public concern is understandable. Yet accountability depends on evidence. The investigation must establish what happened before conclusions can be reached.

This Case Is More Than The Cats

The deaths of 33 cats are at the centre of this story. But there is another question worth examining. Why did the prosecutor feel compelled to challenge the court’s original decision?

The answer may lie in changing public expectations.

For years, animal welfare advocates have argued that crimes against animals are not always treated with the seriousness that society expects. Whether discussing cruelty cases, shelter allegations or attacks on free-roaming animals, one criticism appears repeatedly, that accountability often feels limited or inconsistent.

In this case, the legal process itself became part of the story.

The prosecutor’s office did not simply accept the initial outcome. It formally objected. The objection succeeded. That intervention demonstrates that decisions in animal welfare cases are increasingly subject to scrutiny from both the public and the institutions responsible for enforcing the law

Accountability Requires Transparency

The public outrage surrounding this case is understandable. Thirty-three dead cats found in rubbish bags is disturbing regardless of how they died. The images alone raise serious questions about respect for animals and the standards expected from those entrusted with their care.

However, outrage cannot substitute for evidence. If the cats died from illness, the public deserves to know. If they were euthanised, the public deserves to know under what circumstances. If laws were broken, the public deserves to know who was responsible and how accountability will be achieved.

Transparency is not an obstacle to justice. It is a requirement for it.

The Questions That Remain

As the investigation continues, the most important questions are still unanswered.

What caused the deaths of the cats?

Why were their bodies found where they were?

What evidence has investigators gathered?

And ultimately, will the public receive a clear account of what happened?

The discovery of 33 dead cats has already become a test of public confidence in animal welfare enforcement. Whatever the investigation ultimately finds, the demand emerging from this case is clear:

People are no longer willing to accept animal welfare cases to disappear quietly. They want answers, transparency and accountability.

An incident on the Şanlıurfa–Akçakale road Turkey has begun circulating after being filmed by journalist Mehmet Dener.

A vehicle is moving through traffic. From the rear of the car, a dog’s head appears, not from a window, but through the space where a tail light should be.

The dog is inside the boot. It is trying to get out.

According to the footage, the dog appears to have damaged the tail light from inside the vehicle, forcing an opening large enough to push its head through.

The driver continues on, seemingly unaware. Other road users watch it happen.

The detail in the video matters because it removes any ambiguity about what led to that moment.

This wasn’t an open gap. The dog created the exit itself.

Dogs do not break through parts of a vehicle without a reason.

For that to happen, the pressure inside that space, physical or psychological has already escalated.

Confinement. Airflow. Heat. Stress.

Whatever the combination, it was enough to push the animal past hesitation and into action.

There is a legal question here.

In Türkiye, animals must be protected from distress and unnecessary suffering under Animal Protection Law No. 5199.

Transporting a dog in a way that leads to visible distress and loss of control is a breach of those regulations.

A dog forcing its way out of a moving vehicle:

That places the situation in direct conflict with both welfare and road safety expectations.

In the quiet communities of Penrhiwceiber and Mountain Ash, South Wales, a senseless act of cruelty has left a family devastated and an entire valley mourning.

Zak, a gentle 12-year-old terrier, was stolen on Saturday, 18 April 2026, while out on a walk along the popular Taff Trail. His owner, Ryan Collins, a vulnerable adult walking Zak on behalf of his mother Janet was approached by three local youths. According to reports, they grabbed Zak’s lead and took him.

What should have been a peaceful morning walk turned into a desperate community-wide search. Missing pet groups, local Facebook pages, and social media appeals spread rapidly as friends, neighbours, and animal lovers rallied to help bring Zak home safely.

Tragically, the search ended in heartbreak the very next day. On Sunday, 19 April, Zak was found deceased on nearby railway tracks after being struck by a train. Many believe the youths abandoned him in a dangerous area with no regard for his safety or the deep bond he shared with his family.

Police Investigation Now Underway

South Wales Police have confirmed they received the initial report of the theft on Saturday and are now actively investigating both the theft and the circumstances surrounding Zak’s death. In their public update, the force acknowledged the devastating impact on the local community and urged anyone with information to come forward directly to officers.

The family and wider community have expressed frustration over the initial response time, with reports that multiple contacts were made throughout the day and evening without immediate attendance. While the investigation is now live, questions remain about whether a faster response could have changed the outcome.

Police have stressed that members of the public should allow officers to carry out their inquiries without interference and pass any information including descriptions of the youths or potential CCTV from the Taff Trail or surrounding areas through official channels (non-emergency number 101 or via the South Wales Police website).
