A False Rescue Story, a Donation Page and the Real Scruff

On 29 July 2026, an X account calling itself Corral Sanctuary published footage of a small, visibly unsteady dog named Scruff and claimed:

“I rescued this sweet stray puppy this past Monday.”

The account said it had never owned a dog, described its operator as a cat lady who’s gone completely rogue and promised daily updates about Scruff’s healing journey.

There was one fundamental problem with this story. Scruff had been rescued in Chicago seven weeks earlier and was still living with his real rescuer.

Dog Desk Animal Action contacted Scruff’s rescuer Laura Nicolescu directly. She confirmed that Scruff remains with her.

Scruff’s real rescue

Scruff was first seen wandering on a Chicago street on 6 June. He was dirty, frightened and struggling to maintain his balance.

A call was made to 311 on 8 June, but nobody attended and the ticket was eventually cancelled. After Laura’s friend located the area and sent her a video, Laura drove there with a blanket and a box. She collected Scruff and took him to an animal hospital.

Laura created Scruff’s original fundraiser on 9 June to help meet the cost of his veterinary care. His story was later reported by DogTime, which credited Laura and her Instagram account, @lauraaa_nic.

She signed her fundraiser:

“Laura, crazy cat lady gone rogue.”

Forty nine days after Laura rescued Scruff, Corral Sanctuary used her footage, adopted almost exactly the same description and claimed the rescue in the first person.

Because its post appeared on Wednesday, 29 July, “this past Monday” referred to 27 July. Laura’s confirmation that Scruff remains with her rules out any possibility that Corral Sanctuary rescued him on that date or was responsible for his continuing care.

This was more than unattributed reposting. The account transformed Laura’s documented experience into its own personal rescue narrative.

The account behind the claim

Corral Sanctuary’s profile describes “a girl building a safe haven for rescued and neglected corral animals.” It lists Tennessee as its location and directs visitors to a PayPal hosted donation page displaying the name “CORRAL RESCUE.”

X’s “About this account” information states that the account is based in Uganda and connected through the Uganda Android App. It also shows that the account was created in June 2026, became verified in July and changed its username once during June.

X’s location information does not identify the person operating the account, but it creates a material discrepancy between the Tennessee location presented on the profile and the country identified by the platform.

Dog Desk Animal Action asked Corral Sanctuary to explain why it had claimed to rescue a dog who had already been rescued by Laura. Our question mistakenly referred to 27 June instead of 27 July, but correctly identified Laura, Scruff and the conflicting rescue claim.

The account did not answer. It blocked us. Blocking a questioner does not prove fraud, but it is relevant to how the account responded when asked to account for a demonstrably false statement.

The PayPal page

The PayPal page itself is genuine. The question is whether the story and identity being used to direct people towards it are truthful.

A PayPal hosted donation page does not establish that the social media operator performed the rescue work shown in its posts. It does not verify every statement made on a separate X account, and it should not be treated as proof of registered charitable status.

On 4 August, Dog Desk Animal Action reported the Corral Rescue page to PayPal.

PayPal confirmed that our information had been documented and would be passed to the appropriate team for review. Its representative said that reports involving potentially misleading activity, impersonation and policy violations are taken seriously and that the account would be assessed under PayPal’s policies.

PayPal has not told us that it has reached a decision. We are not claiming that fraud or any criminal offence has been formally established.

What has been established is that Corral Sanctuary claimed a rescue which did not happen.

Scruff was rescued in Chicago by Laura Nicolescu. His original fundraiser was created on 9 June, and Laura has confirmed that he remains with her. Corral Sanctuary later used the footage, echoed Laura’s personal wording and presented his rescue and recovery as its own.

The account’s profile says Tennessee. X says Uganda. The profile links to a PayPal donation page.

These facts are significant because animal rescue fundraising depends on trust. People who see a first person rescue story beside a donation link are entitled to believe that the account telling the story rescued or cared for the animal concerned.

Scruff deserves better than to have his suffering rewritten for somebody else’s benefit, and Laura deserves recognition for the rescue she actually carried out.

Corral Sanctuary is invited to explain its use of Laura’s footage and words, its claim to have rescued Scruff, its location discrepancy and its relationship to the Corral Rescue donation page.
