Another Dog With A Paw Cut Off
Poor little Pumpkin's discovery was heart-wrenching for the shelter project manager.
She was frail, her body underweight, and her fur matted with dirt. The most concerning one leg, which bore a terrible injury. The paw was missing, it was broken & swollen. Most likely infected.
Unfortunately, cases like Pumpkinās are not uncommon. Sometimes, accidents result in the loss of a paw.
However, tragically, there are instances where a starving dog is punished for attempting to survive by stealing food, leading to such cruel injuries.
It's a reminder of the harsh realities faced by many stray animals & even those owned and the urgent need for compassion and care.
Pumpkin sadly lost her leg, it was beyond saving.
In the video, she appears post-surgery, her eyes filled with worry and fear, reflecting the deep misery she feels.
However, Pumpkin need not have been so anxious. The shelter manager, a compassionate woman who has devoted her life to caring for animals like Pumpkin, was her best hope.
Pumpkin's recovery conditions post-discharge were far from ideal. This was before the shelter project was operational and its facilities became accessible to the dogs.
Our funding arrived much later, making it a challenging time for our Turkish friends to support the dogs' needs. They did whatever they could, and I have immense admiration for them because of it.
Often, they went without themselves, and even today, they continue to do so.
Pumpkin healed and was eventually able to mix with other dogs.
She stayed in a temporary shelter where the conditions were quite basic compared to the current standards at the shelter project.
Despite this, the dogs were well cared for, receiving food, water, and shelter. Most importantly, they were safe and loved.
Upon transferring to the shelter project, Pumpkin blossomed into a completely different dog.
The improved surroundings seemed to suit her perfectly, and she couldn't stop smiling!
The new environment was a haven, offering her more space to explore and interact.
Her tail wagged constantly, a clear sign of her happiness.
Pumpkin's transformation was a testament to the positive impact of a nurturing environment. A well designed space can have a profound affect on an animal's life.
Our funding has enabled more vulnerable dogs to find safety and companionship at the shelter project. Many dogs just like Pumpkin.
In the picture, you can see her with another tripaw, and Walter, who has a portion of one limb missing.
Some of our amputee friends enjoy a specially designed space just for them, although not all are separated from the other dogs. Take Walter, for instance; he resides in Town Square with the big kangals and loves it.
His strength allows him to join in the rough play that many dogs enjoy, and that suits him perfectly.
While people often feel sympathy for dogs like Pumpkin, I assure you there's no need.
They are incredibly happy and capable. The best thing you can do is toss them a ball and watch their joy!
