Another Dog Let Down By A Law Which Should Have Protected It
May 21st 2025
A tragic event unfolded in Cankaya, leading to the unfortunate death of a beloved dog and subsequent civil unrest.
Reports indicate that the municipality was conducting a collection of dogs in the Birlik area when they encountered a dog well-known to the local community.
For years, kind-hearted individuals in the area had been caring for this elderly, overweight, yet healthy and very docile dog.
Kind people expressed a desire to adopt the stray & take him home with them. These offers were declined.
The workers had plans to tranquilize the dog with medication, a method that many citizens deemed unsafe given the dog's age.
Despite these concerns, their advice was disregarded, and the dog was sedated multiple times.
The dog could not wake up so was taken to a veterinary clinic where they worked for many hours to stabalise him.
After 11 hours he was pronounced dead
We have seen numerous instances of very old, friendly, slow moving, often arthritic dogs being darted & we wonder why this is?
Surely municipalities are being correctly advised by their vets of the risks involved when using anaesthetic on geriatric dogs particularly when it is being administered in a non clinical setting.
A vet report stated that he died from acute respiratory failure which may have developed due to the drugs he had been given.
It is crucial to obtain a comprehensive physical assessment of each dog prior to administering anesthetic medication.
This assessment helps to determine the appropriate dosage based on the dog's weight, thereby minimizing the risk of overdosing.
In a non-clinical setting, performing these tasks on a dog with an unknown medical history presents significant challenges.
Without access to medical records or a controlled environment, accurately assessing the dog's health and determining the correct medication dosage becomes exceedingly difficult.
The news spread quickly, and the community was overwhelmed with grief and outrage.
People gathered, united in their sorrow, at the steps of Cankaya municipality, where they lay the dogs body.
The air was filled with murmurs of disbelief and anger, interspersed with heartfelt tributes to the beloved animal.
Conversations focused on how to prevent such incidents in the future, with a shared determination to bring about change.
This spontaneous assembly became a testament to the strength and empathy of the people, who came together to honour the dog's memory and advocate for justice.
The municipality's decision to confiscate the dog led to significant unrest among the crowd, who were determined to have the dog undergo an autopsy to confirm the veterinarians' expert opinion on the cause of death.
Tensions flared, resulting in a physical altercation where many compassionate individuals, including numerous women, suffered violence as they voiced their concerns and sought transparency.
The municipality made a brief statement in which it felt that the love people have for animals was being exploited for political purposes.
We would like to express our deep disappointment regarding this terrible loss of life as we believe that every life is precious, both animal & human.
It is very distressing to witness behaviours which should have been avoided claiming the lives of so many innocent creatures.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this dreadful event.
