Calls To End Euthanasia Of Healthy Dogs After 14 Days In Public Shelters
Proposed changes to Romania’s legislation governing free roaming dogs have renewed calls for an end to provisions allowing healthy dogs to be euthanised after spending 14 days in a public shelter. Hilde Tudora, director of the Ilfov County Animal Protection Directorate, has argued that a new national approach should instead prioritise compulsory sterilisation and stronger penalties for people who abandon dogs, amid continuing concerns over the country’s management of free-roaming animals and conditions within public shelters.

While the facility is being presented as an expansion of local animal care capacity, its opening comes within the wider context of the country’s nationwide collection programme, which has already raised serious concerns over shelter capacity, overcrowding and the long term fate of dogs once removed. With municipalities under pressure to collect free roaming dogs, the continued expansion of facilities does not address the fundamental welfare concerns surrounding the policy itself or the risks faced by dogs being taken from familiar communities and placed into lifelong confinement.
