A new Animal Welfare Barometer has found overwhelming public support for stronger animal welfare protections in Germany. Large majorities backed compulsory neutering of outdoor cats, clearer food labelling, tighter regulation of exotic pet ownership and greater government action to improve animal welfare. The findings also highlighted a significant gap between public expectations and perceptions of current government action, with fewer than a quarter of respondents believing enough is currently being done for animals.

Authorities Rescue Around 250 Dogs During Major Animal Welfare Operation
Portuguese authorities have rescued approximately 250 dogs during a major multi-agency operation at an alleged commercial breeding establishment in Amarante. Veterinary authorities, police, municipal officials and animal welfare organisations participated in the intervention after investigators reportedly discovered hundreds of dogs, including around 50 puppies, being kept in poor conditions. The rescued animals are now receiving veterinary treatment while investigations continue.

The Municipality of Puerto Morelos has strengthened its municipal sterilisation programme following the delivery of new veterinary equipment and surgical supplies to its Animal Welfare Department. Officials said the additional resources will allow veterinary teams to increase the number of free dog and cat sterilisations carried out each day as part of the municipality’s long-term strategy to reduce free-roaming animal populations through preventative veterinary care and responsible ownership.
