Ranchi Plans New Birth Control Centre As Street Dog Population Reaches 34,000
Ranchi Municipal Corporation is planning a new Animal Birth Control centre as the city attempts to manage an estimated 34,000 street dogs.
The proposed facility at Bargai will have capacity for 50 kennels and is expected to cost approximately ₹2.05 crore.
The centre is intended to increase the city’s capacity to sterilise and treat street dogs as part of its ABC programme. A tender for the project was published on 11 September, with bids due to close on 24 September.
Sterilisation is a humane and proven component of street-dog population management. But the numbers demonstrate the scale of the task facing Ranchi.
A city estimated to have 34,000 street dogs is preparing a facility containing 50 kennels.
Building it is one step. Whether Ranchi can sterilise enough dogs, quickly enough and consistently enough to affect population growth will be the real test.

One Dog Found Dead And Six Others Removed From Boston Apartment
A Boston man is facing seven animal cruelty charges after police found one dog dead and six others reportedly malnourished inside a South Boston apartment.
Police attended the property on 7 September after Lester James, 39, called 911 to report that one of his dogs had died.
According to prosecutors, officers found the dead pit bull inside a cage containing faeces and vomit. Elsewhere in the apartment they reportedly found an emaciated pit bull chained to a kitchen wall, three young pit bulls described as emaciated and two other dogs that appeared malnourished.
James reportedly told police he was keeping the dogs for breeding.
Boston Animal Care and Control removed the six surviving dogs, which have been receiving veterinary treatment.
James has pleaded not guilty. He was held on $5,000 bail, ordered not to possess animals and is due back in court on 20 October.
Six dogs survived the apartment. One did not.

Animal Welfare Group Condemns Alleged Killing Of Dogs Over Damaged Slippers
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society has urged people to stop supporting a content creator following allegations that two dogs were ordered killed after damaging slippers.
The controversy involves a vlogger in Lemery, Batangas, and has prompted PAWS to remind the public that alleged cruelty towards animals should be reported rather than treated simply as social-media entertainment.
The organisation has also highlighted the protections available under the Philippines’ Animal Welfare Act.
The allegations have generated anger online, but there is a wider issue here.
When cruelty becomes content, attention can become currency.
People watching, sharing and following creators accused of exploiting animal suffering can inadvertently help make that content profitable.
Animal cruelty should never be entertainment.

Cat Rescue Warns Stray Problem Is Worsening As Neutering Rates Fall
A Shropshire rescue has warned that increasing veterinary costs and declining neutering levels are contributing to growing numbers of unwanted and stray cats.
Newbridge Cat Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Cleobury Mortimer currently has 26 kittens in its care alongside adult cats, including some of their mothers.
Founder Marion Parsons says increasing numbers of people are bringing cats to the centre, while others are being abandoned.
Figures from Cats Protection show that the proportion of cats being neutered has fallen from 88% in 2020 to 82% last year.
The cost of neutering is one factor believed to be contributing to the decline.
This is how a manageable problem becomes a population crisis.
Every litter that could have been prevented creates more animals requiring homes, veterinary treatment and eventually neutering themselves.
When rescues are already struggling for space, those animals have fewer places to go.

Dog Found Confined In Cage Inside Unattended Vehicle
Police in Ontario have charged a pet owner following the discovery of a dog confined inside a cage in an unattended vehicle at Tanger Outlets in Cookstown.
South Simcoe Police were called to the shopping centre after concerns were raised about the animal.
Officers reported finding the dog inside a cage in the trunk area of the vehicle.
The animal was removed and subsequently placed in the care of animal-welfare authorities.
The owner has been charged under Ontario’s Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act.

Woman Arrested After Injured Dog Allegedly Dragged Along Road In Huesca
A woman has been arrested following an incident involving a seriously injured dog in Huesca, Spain.
The dog, Roma, was reportedly struck by a vehicle on Friday.
According to animal organisation Salvando Huellas, what happened afterwards was even more disturbing: the injured animal was allegedly dragged along the road rather than immediately receiving the veterinary help she needed.
Police subsequently arrested a woman in connection with the incident.
Roma survived and has been receiving veterinary treatment, while Salvando Huellas has appealed for help towards the cost of her care.
The allegations will ultimately have to be established through the investigation and any subsequent proceedings.
