Honey Was Run Over On Purpose
Honey was an older dog who came under our protection when she was run over on purpose by a car.
Sadly there are people who view stray dogs as vermin in Turkey & boast about doing “pest control” with their cars.
Honey was in the wrong place at the wrong time & was a victim of one of these monsters.
Honey was hit in a busy street during the day.
Somebody saw the incident, recorded what they could of the crime & called for the ambulance.
Sometimes people are criticised for getting a camera out at the scene of animal abuse, but if this is done in a manner which does not harm the victim or delay help it is very useful in trying to bring an offender to justice.
When the ambulance arrived Honey had stopped moving, she was lying on the ground in very obvious pain with what looked like an injury to her leg.
She was treated for shock at the scene & taken to the clinic where the trauma team were waiting patiently for her
She was given a name & a pretty pink colour with brightly coloured beaded jewels.
We do this so that they become someone & not something & for the first time in her life she had something that was hers, that collar was her first & last possession.
Honey was sent to ICU because she was battling more than just that broken leg.
She had pyometra, an infection of the womb, necrotising fasciitis & chest injuries from the impact.
As days passed we didn’t know if she would survive. Her chest injuries were severe & her breathing compromised but she rallied.
We breathed a sigh of relief but our optimism was short lived & I learned another important lesson in the clinic
Don’t count your chickens before they hatch
I got that dreadful call, the one that makes you wish you had not picked up.
Honey was gone.
Our vets had fixed all her problems but the necrotising fasciitis had beaten them.
I was so upset & full of anger.
Honey had survived the streets way beyond that which most street dogs achieve. The average lifespan is just 4 years old & Honey was about double that.
To lose her in such a cruel & callous manner was unbearable.
