More Animal Abuse In Konya
March 8th 2025
The news that reached us was deeply unsettling. A tragic incident had occurred in Konya, where a toddler was attacked and killed by dogs. The little girl was discovered wearing only a top, with a severe head injury and wounds on her shoulders. The community, overwhelmed by grief and anger, believed that stray dogs were responsible for the tragedy and sought retribution.
After hearing about a dog hunt being organized for that evening, I reached out to my network to verify the information. It's not uncommon for comments made in passing to become distorted as they spread. Unfortunately, my network confirmed that men with guns were indeed planning to patrol the streets, aiming to shoot any dogs they encountered.
The following day, reports surfaced alleging that 50 dogs were missing, with several found dead from gunshot wounds.

Disturbing footage emerged showing the unacceptable mistreatment of animals at the Konya Karatay municipal shelter.
The video reveals a distressing scene where an individual violently kicks a defenceless animal before forcing it into a cage. The person is seen yanking a pole with rope tied around the animal's neck with excessive force, repeatedly hitting its head against the fence.
The cruelty continues as another individual spins a dog in the air multiple times, only to slam it onto the ground and press down on its neck in a threatening manner.
The harrowing scene continues as an animal is dragged out, laid on the ground, and subjected to further abuse.
The perpetrators use ropes and rods to abuse the dogs, showing no regard for their desperate struggles & the kennel cages are terribly overcrowded
This footage highlights an urgent need for intervention and reform at the shelter to ensure the safety and humane treatment of these vulnerable animals.

Animal advocate Ibrahim Kaya appeared on Halk TV, where he strongly criticized the events that transpired at the Konya Karatay Shelter.
His critique focused on the conditions and treatment of animals within the shelter, highlighting the need for immediate improvements and reforms to ensure the welfare and humane treatment of the animals housed there.
Kaya's appearance aimed to raise awareness and prompt action from authorities and the public to address the issues at the shelter.

The recent actions of Karatay municipal shelter workers have raised concerns about the treatment of dogs during collection.
According to the amendments to Law 5199, only sick and aggressive dogs were initially to be collected.
However, a subsequent directive expanded this to include all dogs.
In this particular incident, the workers handled the dog with little care, tossing him into the van as if he were an inanimate object rather than a living, sentient being.
This treatment seems to contradict the training that municipal staff reportedly received regarding the humane and safe handling of dogs.
It highlights a need for reinforcing proper animal handling protocols to ensure that all animals are treated with the respect and care they deserve.
Konya has a troubling history when it comes to animal abuse.
In 2022, a horrific incident occurred at the Konya Metropolitan Municipality Stray Animal Shelter and Rehabilitation Centre, where a shelter worker was caught on video brutally killing a stray dog with a shovel.
This act of cruelty sparked international outrage, yet it appears that Konya has not learned anything from this.
Despite the backlash, ongoing concerns about animal welfare in the region persist, highlighting the need for more robust measures and awareness to prevent such incidents in the future.
The community and authorities must work together to ensure that humane treatment of animals becomes a priority and that past errors are not repeated.
Dog Desk Animal Action is actively encouraging animal advocates & Mayors to team up in the best interests of the dogs & the reputation of Turkey
