Nohut was a little dog living on the streets of Türkiye. She was friendly, trusting and accustomed to the world she knew. But that world was becoming increasingly dangerous. The municipal dog catchers were looking for her, and her future was uncertain.
Fortunately, a community animal carer stepped in and brought Nohut to safety.
For a dog who had spent her life on the streets, everything had suddenly changed. The familiar sights, sounds and routines were gone. Nohut found herself in a world she didn’t understand, surrounded by new experiences and expectations.
She was a friendly little girl, but being friendly didn’t mean she knew how to cope with everything happening around her. She needed time to adjust, to understand that she was safe and to learn to trust this unfamiliar way of living.
Her community carer gave her that time. We supported her needs.
There were no shortcuts. Just patience, kindness, reassurance and the quiet determination to help a little dog find her confidence. And gradually, love conquered her fears.
The bewildered little dog began to settle. The unfamiliar became familiar, and the bond between Nohut and the person caring for her grew stronger every day.
But there was always another chapter waiting.
Nohut had been offered the opportunity of a permanent home in Germany. It was everything her carer had hoped for: a future away from the dangers of the streets, with a family of her own and the security every dog deserves.
Then came the day of her departure. Nohut was loaded onto her transport, ready to begin the long journey to Germany. For her, it was the beginning of a new life. For the person who had rescued her, it was a deeply emotional goodbye.
And this is one of the hardest parts of fostering.
Community carers open their homes and their hearts to animals who need them. They nurse them through illness, help them overcome fear, teach them to trust and celebrate every little step forward. They become part of the animals’ lives, and the animals become part of theirs.
They do all this knowing that, if everything goes well, the day will come when they must say goodbye.
It is an extraordinary act of generosity. To love an animal, give them everything they need and then let them go because somewhere else lies the permanent home they deserve.
That doesn’t make the goodbye any easier. There is an empty space where a little dog once slept, familiar routines that suddenly feel different and the inevitable worry about how they will manage without the person who has become their whole world. But there is also the knowledge that another life has been changed.
Fostering is so much more than providing temporary accommodation. It is often the bridge between a dangerous past and a secure future. Without people willing to offer that bridge, dogs like Nohut might never have the opportunity to find a family.
Nohut’s community carer gave her something precious: the chance to leave the streets behind and begin again.
And when the time came, she gave Nohut one final gift. She let her go.
For every community carer and fosterer who has stood beside a transport vehicle, holding back tears while an animal they love begins a new journey, this story is for you. Because sometimes the greatest act of love is saying goodbye.
