Yet today, this noble breed faces exploitation, cruelty, and misrepresentation that threaten its very survival.
The Dark Side of Popularity
Because of their size and power, Kangals have been misused by dog fighters and criminals.
Torn from their rightful place as livestock guardians, they are bred and sold for violence, condemned to lives of suffering. This cruel practice damages the breed’s reputation, painting them as dangerous when in truth they are loyal, gentle, and deeply bonded to their families.
Irresponsible breeding also adds to their plight. Demand for Kangals both in Turkey and abroad has led to crossbreeding and puppy farming, diluting the bloodlines and subjecting dogs to neglect and poor health.
Misunderstood and Misplaced
Another challenge lies in unsuitable homes.
The Kangal is not a city dog. Bred to patrol open plains, they struggle in cramped apartments and urban backyards. When their protective instincts cannot be expressed properly, these dogs can become stressed, reactive, and even abandoned. Although there are exceptions to the rule.
Why We Must Act
If we want to preserve the true Kangal, we must:
End dog fighting and the breeding of Kangals for violence.
Promote responsible ownership, ensuring Kangals are only placed in homes and environments suited to their needs.
Educate the public about the breed’s true nature as a guardian, not a weapon.
A Symbol Worth Saving
The Kangal dog represents centuries of partnership between people and animals in Turkey.
To allow exploitation to erase that legacy would be a tragedy. Together, we can protect the Kangal’s heritage, honouring them as guardians, not commodities.
