Saving Hit & Run Victim Calum
Sadly, we see an awful lot of hit-and-run patients under our free healthcare for vulnerable dogs programme. Today, I want to introduce you to one of those patients: his name is Calum. He is a little street-born dog who collided with a car, which drove off and left him badly injured.
Luckily for little Calum a kind lady saw him on the road unable to move. She scooped him up, took him to her home & called for help.
The shelter manager treated Calum for shock right away & took him to our vet for assessment.
Calum had an obvious injury to one leg. He was holding it up, unable to bear weight with paw curled. I don’t know if there is any science in my observation but whenever I see this the dogs have had a broken pelvis.
Aside from the situation with Calum’s leg his preliminary tests were all good which meant if surgery was needed it could go ahead right away.
X-rays revealed what we suspected. Calum had a fractured hip which needed immediate intervention.
Calum’s surgery went as expected & he recovered quickly.
Dogs like Calum go to the shelter project once they have healed & often stay there for the rest of their lives.
Homes are very thin on the ground in Turkey where only 5% of homes will accept a dog & most of that percentage preferring to buy a breed puppy.
Calum hit the jackpot when a kind lady came forward & offered to foster him.
While fostering in the UK is very common it isn’t the norm in Turkey, we were so happy to hear that somebody was willing to take on that role.
Once the necessary checks & legals were done, Calum was able to move in to his temporary foster.
Things got even better for our little boy, he is still there!
Don’t you just love a failed foster
