I first met Olive way back in August 2022.
A female Kangal had been admitted to the clinic disoriented and unable to walk properly. Dr. V, our consultant vet, got to work to find out the cause.
Poor Olive had been shot but the bullet wasn’t what was causing her problems & aside from her difficulties walking her general health was good.
Fairly quickly the root cause of Olive’s problems was found. She had a bleed on the brain from blunt force trauma.
Dr V said that although she was covered in mud he felt that the trauma wasn’t from collision with a vehicle
Someone had beaten Olive to the head with an implement such as a shovel or similar. The force of the blows had caused the bleed.
The vet team did what was necessary & a while later Olive made a full physical recovery.
The experience left Olive very afraid of people & who could blame her after the abuse she had suffered.
Olive is fine with other dogs but whenever there is a person around she runs & hides somewhere. Her favourite spot is in between the perimeter fence & a hut.
Despite great effort from the shelter manager Olive’s fear has not decreased. She will remain at the shelter where she is safe & happy for as long as she needs the facility.
We have no idea if Olive will truly overcome her fear of people & like so many dogs she may live out the rest of her life in the environment which makes her happiest.
