A street dog found with a vine support stake embedded in its eye has survived thanks to the quick actions of local residents and municipal veterinary staff in western Türkiye.
The injured dog was discovered in Ayan neighbourhood, in the Sarıgöl district of Manisa Province, after concerned members of the public noticed something was seriously wrong. Unable to help the animal themselves, they contacted Sarıgöl Municipality, whose officers responded quickly and transported the dog safely to the municipal animal shelter for emergency treatment.
Veterinary staff successfully treated the dog, and municipal officials say it is now recovering well under close observation. According to the municipality, the dog remains in rehabilitation at the shelter, where it is receiving ongoing care while it continues to regain its strength.
Mayor Tahsin Akdeniz thanked the residents who reported the injured animal, saying their actions had made the rescue possible. He also praised the work of the municipality’s veterinary team and reaffirmed the local authority’s commitment to protecting the welfare of animals living within the district.
Although it remains unclear how the stake became lodged in the dog’s eye, the incident serves as another reminder of the dangers faced every day by free roaming dogs. Injuries from traffic, deliberate cruelty, accidents and environmental hazards continue to place thousands of animals at risk across the country.
At a time when much of the discussion surrounding Türkiye’s street dogs centres on collection campaigns and shelter capacity, stories such as this demonstrate that prompt reporting by members of the public, combined with rapid veterinary intervention, can save lives.
The dog is expected to remain under veterinary supervision until it has made a full recovery.
