The Attempted Extermination Of A Species
Why do humans respond to problems of their own doing with violence?
How is it that a few words on a piece of paper, which on the surface looked like a good idea went so bad so fast?
Our friends in Turkey no longer want to live with dogs on the streets & we get that. We don’t want dogs living in that way, alone & in suffering & have been working very hard for the last three years to the same end.
Our approach is through humane population control with spay & neuter & education, which is proven to work but it takes time & effort.
Right now our Turkish friends are making choices which will do no good for anyone.
Dogs are going missing in the dead of night never to be seen again.
Whistle-blowers are telling us that dogs are being culled behind closed doors & shrouded in secrecy.
One whistle-blower said “I am being told to take dogs I have no room for. When I tell them this they tell me to kill healthy non aggressive dogs to make room”
We are so saddened to hear this. Culling does not & has not ever been successful as a stray dog management tool & there is plenty of data to support that claim.
In fact, more than a hundred years ago the Sultan removed every dog from the streets of Istanbul & now there are more living there than ever before. Have our friends forgotten this?
People are afraid & this in itself is not acceptable
It’s not just community carers who are afraid, private enterprise & dog owners are afraid too.
There have been so many threats of violence & even death wishes heaped on people whose only crime is kindness, love & understanding for a species different than their own.
The insult law which is punishable by fines & custodial sentences seems to have been forgotten too as people with a strong dislike for animals seek out targets to insult & harass.
An elderly lady of eighty plus years passed away in a house fire after receiving multiple insults & threats online just because she fed & spayed & neutered dogs.
The current situation has gotten out of hand & needs to stop!
