A Speech That Changed Everything
In 2021, the atmosphere in Turkey changed dramatically for dogs. A speech by President Erdoğan, made in response to the tragic mauling of a child by two owned dogs, set off a wave of hostility across the country. In his remarks, he urged so-called “White Turks” to control their dogs—a message that quickly spiralled into something far darker.
Strays Become Targets
Almost overnight, a nationwide climate of fear and resentment towards dogs began to grow. Stray dogs, who had committed no offence and lived peacefully in their communities, suddenly became the targets of anger. Municipal authorities responded by rounding up strays en masse, driving them to remote forests, and abandoning them to face starvation, disease, and certain death.
NGOs Fight Back
For those of us working in animal welfare, these were devastating times. Local NGOs did everything they could, rescuing dogs from culling sites, expanding their feeding programmes, and trying to provide shelter in already overstretched facilities. Despite their extraordinary efforts, the scale of suffering was overwhelming
Dog Desk Animal Action Steps In
It was during this period that Dog Desk Animal Action stepped in to help. We partnered with grassroots organisations on the ground after due diligence , providing emergency support for feeding stations and helping dogs who had nowhere else to turn. From this response, the seeds of Kibble Club were sown.
From Local Crisis to Global Movement
What began as a crisis intervention has since grown into a global movement. Today, Kibble Club provides hundreds of meals every single day to vulnerable street dogs who rely on human kindness for survival. Through the support of our members and donors around the world, we’ve turned despair into hope—ensuring that abandoned dogs are not forgotten.
