Why Dog Desk Animal Action Is Going International
For years, Dog Desk Animal Action’s work has focused on two countries. That will not change. The dogs still need us, and we remain committed to them.
But something worrying is happening. Türkiye’s recent changes to stray-dog policy have left the country overwhelmed. Not long after, India looked set to try something similar. That was stopped but for how long? It is only a matter of time before another country follows suit.
We have seen the damage this approach causes. We also know what works instead. That is why we are taking the step to work internationally: to share what we’ve learned, to support others facing similar threats, and to make sure humane solutions don’t get drowned out by fear.
What we aim to do
Going international does not mean overreaching. It means being ready to offer practical help where it is needed most. Our focus will be on:
Sharing experience: Using what we’ve learned to guide communities elsewhere when harmful policies are proposed.
Supporting local groups: Offering help through learned experience so they can respond quickly.
Providing clear information: Helping challenge fear-based narratives with facts the public and policymakers can trust.
Keeping watch: Monitoring developments so that we can step in early, before harmful measures take hold.
Our current commitment remains
The move to a more international focus will only strengthen our current work. Everything we learn from further afield will feed back into our projects - better strategies, stronger networks, and more resilient ways of working.
What success will look like
We are not trying to “fix everything.” Instead, we will measure success by:
Helping prevent harmful policies from taking root.
Supporting local partners to keep dogs safe in their own communities.
Ensuring our current work continues and grows stronger.
