Why We Are Raising Our Voice For Stray Dogs Beyond Turkey
At Dog Desk Animal Action, our campaign to end the brutal culling of stray dogs in Turkey has always been at the heart of our mission.
However, in recent months we have felt compelled to extend our advocacy further afield. Across Morocco, India, and Pakistan, countless dogs are enduring the same fate—rounded up, poisoned, beaten, or shot under the guise of “population control.”
This is not just a regional issue. It is an epidemic of suffering.
The Global Crisis of Dog Culling
From Istanbul to Islamabad, from Casablanca to Delhi, dogs are being treated as disposable. Authorities often cite public safety or disease control as justification, but the reality is that these mass killings are both cruel and ineffective.
Humane alternatives exist—spay/neuter programmes, vaccination drives, community education—but they are disregarded in favour of quick, violent measures that satisfy fear rather than address root causes.
The result is a cycle of cruelty that breeds more suffering, not less.
Our Guiding Principle
Since the very beginning of our operations, our CEO and founder Michelle Robertson has been unwavering in her conviction:
“No puppy should be born to stray. It is our moral duty to protect them from suffering no matter where in the world they were born.”
This principle is what drives us to act beyond Turkeys borders. We cannot claim to protect dogs if we turn away from their suffering simply because it occurs elsewhere.
Why We Cannot Remain Silent
We could choose to stay focused only on Turkey. But to do so would be to ignore the same horror being played out in other countries.
Silence is complicity. If we do not stand up for dogs wherever they are being slaughtered, we endorse the idea that their lives are less valuable depending on geography.
Animal welfare is not defined by borders. Compassion is not selective.
A Call to the Global Animal Welfare Movement
We are calling on animal welfare organisations everywhere to raise their voices. It is not enough to quietly disapprove of culling.
Each organisation, each advocate, and each supporter must speak out. Governments must be challenged, alternatives must be promoted, and international pressure must mount.
The world is watching, but too often it looks away.
What We Can Do Together
Raise Awareness – Share information about the inhumanity and ineffectiveness of culling.
Pressure Authorities – Call on local and national governments to adopt humane management programmes.
Support Grassroots Work – Fund and amplify the organisations on the ground providing sterilisation, vaccination, and community outreach.
Stand United – Whether it is Turkey, Morocco, India, or Pakistan, our collective voice is stronger when we speak together.
To Be Silent Is To Be Complicit
Every poisoned meal, every shot fired, every terrified life extinguished—these are preventable tragedies.
By raising our voices across borders, we remind the world that dogs are not vermin to be eradicated but sentient beings deserving of life, safety, and respect.
This is an epidemic of suffering. And epidemics demand a united, global response.
Raise Your Voice for Stray Dogs
If you care about the lives of vulnerable dogs, we are asking you to stand with us. Speak out, share the truth, and demand an end to the culling of strays. Every voice matters—yours can save lives.
